Практически любой хостер использует в качестве веб-сервера связку

nginx+apache,

 

а потому правильно такой редирект нужно настраивать в конфиге nginx.

Тем более, что практически любой хостер в своей панели управления имеет для такого редиректа галочку.

 

Делать такие вещи в .htaccess можно только в случае если у вас голый apache.

А при использовании nginx+apache  сертификат и редиректы прописываются именно в конфиге nginx.

Это, конечно, если нет желания получить "таинственные и необъяснимые" проблемы.

Возможные проблемы, извините, нет желания описывать. Про это много написано и без меня. А тут, как я понимаю, вроде как справочник способов.

@AWARO , для примера,

одна из множества возникающих проблем из-а прописывания редиректов http на https в файле .htaccess:

 

не будут работать редиректы для части файлов: для изображений, фонтов и прочей статики, которую обрабатывает nginx и которая до апачи даже не доходит (апачи вместе со своим .htaccess даже и не ведают, что существуют файлы *.jpeg и т. д.).

 

Я не говорю о возможных зацикливающихся редиректах, когда будет прописано и в конфиге nginx и в конфиге .htaccess.

 

Поэтому правило гласит: только через конфиг nginx  такие редиректы нужно делать.

Все остальное - очень вредные советы.
